What is Ban Rom Sai Guest House?

Ban Rom Sai Guest House is one of several projects run by the Ban Rom Sai orphanage, aimed at helping it become more financially independent and lessen its reliance on donations. The long-term vision is have the children at the orphanage, who are interested in tourism and hospitality run and manage the guest house, once they are grown up. The room fees for the guest house will directly go towards supporting the Ban Rom Sai orphanage.

What is Ban Rom Sai?

Ban Rom Sai in Thai means “the house under the Banyan tree” and symbolizes a tranquil and serene setting. This name was chosen by the founder of the orphanage, Ms. Miwa Natori, a Japanese national, who was moved by the plight of Thai children affected by AIDS. Her goal was to create a tranquil home for those children who are either HIV-positive or have lost their parents to AIDS. The orphanage has been operating since 1997 and 30 children call Ban Rom Sai their home, ranging in age from 3 to 15.

Where is Ban Rom Sai Guest House located?

Ban Rom Sai Guest House is adjacent to the Ban Rom Sai orphanage, about 15 minutes by car from the city center of Chiang Mai (south of the airport). It is set in a very tranquil and quiet farming area. The guest house property is set off from the orphanage itself, in a luscious orchard setting. Access is best by car and for guests wanting to explore the city center, either a rental car, taxi or car hire (with driver) is recommended.

What facilities are there at the Ban Rom Sai Guest House?

The guest house itself consists of two one-bedroom cottages, with en suite bathrooms and a shared, but separate living, dining and kitchen cottage. A second self-contained cottage, with its own bathroom, dining room, living room and kitchen, will be completed soon. All cottages can accommodate up to two adults and additional beds are available for children (the new cottage can accommodate two adults and two children, with no extra beds). All rooms are decorated in Thai-style and are functional in nature, with a fully-equipped kitchen. A separate laundry room is also available.

The buildings were designed and built with Thai-style in mind, using only local materials. The use of thatched roofing materials makes the cottages and outlying buildings cool in the heat and blend in nicely with the former orchard setting. The whole area is quiet and serene.

The guests can also enjoy the outdoor swimming pool and herbal sauna room.

What type of guests would enjoy a stay at Ban Rom Sai Guest House?

The idea behind the guest house was originally to have guests stay a relaxing 1-2 weeks, however, shorter stays are also welcome. Ex-pats living in the Chiang Mai or Bangkok have found the guest house to be a perfect weekend get-away. It is a great place to relax, enjoy nature, do some reading or  writing. The herbal sauna is soothing and the swimming pool provides a nice reprieve from the mid-day heat. There is plenty to explore on foot, such as the outlying mountains and nearby villages.

There are very few amenities near the guest house, so the guest house is well suited for those, who can be self-sufficient. The kitchens at the guest house are well-equipped and trips to the local market can easily be arranged. Public transportation is not available near the guest house and car rental, car hire or taxi are the only options available for going into Chiang Mai’s city center or exploring tourist sites.

What are room rates at Ban Rom Sai?

The two cottages that have shared living and kitchen areas are priced at THB 1,500 per cottage (each can sleep two adults and additional beds for children are available free of charge).

The larger, self-contained cottage, is still under construction and will be completed soon. This cottage can sleep two adults and two children and has its own fully-equipped kitchen, living area and dining room. Please contact us for pricing for this cottage (Click here for e−mail link).

Comments from former guests of Ban Rom Sai Guest House:

It was incredible to see the sky full of stars and fall asleep with a symphony of birds, frogs and insects in the background. In the morning, I was awoken by the sweet scent of flowers. I felt like I was in heaven.

Ms. Y from Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan)

I haven’t enjoyed such deep and peaceful sleep in a long long time!  I felt exhilarated and refreshed in the morning.

Swimming alone in the cool waters of the pool, after a hot steam in the herbal sauna was just invigorating! What a luxury it was to just enjoy these things alone and away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
